Mark has been training and handling search dogs since 1983, and co-founded ASD in 1986. Mark’s current and fourth search partner, Tashi, is a 4 year old black German Shepherd. Mark and Tashi are currently certified in Wilderness (air scent) and Cadaver disciplines. They are working towards trailing and water certification as well. Tashi’s successes include assisting with locating two hikers who were lost overnight in the Beartooth Mountains.
Mark lives in Red Lodge with his wife Diane and 17 year old son Nate, who has become famous for helping Mark train their search dogs. Mark’s roles in emergency services are numerous. He is an Emergency RN at Billings Clinic in Billings, and has been a volunteer with the EMS Division at Red Lodge Fire Rescue (RLFR) since 1988. He founded the RLFR Wilderness Medical Team in 1995, providing EMS care on SAR operations. He is also a member of Carbon County SAR, where he functions as a member of the command staff, field team member and field team leader.
Mark’s previous German Shepherd search partners, Shadow, Eiger and Winda were well known in the Montana SAR community and each dog participated on many searches with Mark, each having several finds to their credit.
When not involved with emergency services, Mark enjoys cross country and telemark skiing, backpacking, trail running and fishing the high mountain lakes of the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness, as well as trekking and climbing in the Himalayan Mountains of Nepal
